Nordic Semiconductor nRF52840

Thread Certified

The nRF52840 System-on-Chip (SoC) is an advanced, highly flexible, ultra-low power multiprotocol SoC ideally suited for ultra-low power wireless applications. It is particularly well suited for smart home and advanced wearable applications, including wearables for payment and medical purposes, as well as for industrial sensors and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

The nRF52840 SoC is built around a 32-bit ARM® Cortex™-M4F CPU with 1 MB flash and 256 kB RAM available on the chip. The embedded 2.4 GHz transceiver supports Bluetooth® low energy (Bluetooth 5), 802.15.4, ANT, and proprietary 2.4 GHz protocols. It is on air compatible with the existing nRF52 Series, nRF51 Series, and nRF24 Series products from Nordic Semiconductor.

Nordic Semiconductor provides full support for its platform within OpenThread and actively participates in the development of OpenThread by co-authoring the core of this stack.

OpenThread running on the nRF52840 SoC is a Thread Certified Component.

Important notice

Due to legal restrictions, support for hardware-accelerated cryptography utilizing ARM CryptoCell-310 is only available in mbedTLS library (libmbedcrypto.a) provided with the nRF5 SDK for Thread. The library available in the OpenThread repository does not support hardware acceleration. You can still use it, but the commissioning procedure takes much more time in such case. For the best performance and user experience, use the library provided with the SDK.
